Dream On Dictionary S-Z

San Diego

To go to San Diego in a dream may indicate that you are in a border area. In waking life, there is a major border crossing between San Diego and the city of Tia Juana. The border is open and free and thousands of people pass back and forth across the border every day. Since Mexico symbolizes a culture where emotions and feelings are expressed more openly, being in San Diego in a dream means that I’m in a place (a good place) where I can easily communication between reason/intellect and my emotional/intuitive self. San Diego is a place of harmonious balance.

San Diego can represent a point of union, the coming together of unlike things, or integration.

Schools

A school is  a place of learning. The world is a classroom, our peers, our jobs, many places. You have been summoned in a dream to a school to learn something new or be reminded of an older basic lesson.

  • Secondary School - Place to learn a more advanced lesson. Perhaps you’ve gotten pretty far without ever learning some important lesson. Now is the time to ask to be open to receive the learning. It is perhaps a lesson you are already aware of but have not fully accepted or adopted. Now is the time.

  • Elementary School - Simple lessons. If you find yourself back in your first or fourth grade classroom, you might need to remember some basic lesson you’ve learned many years ago.

  • Higher Ed or University - Represents learning beyond life’s easy lessons. The lessons offered here will require commitment, follow-through, and opening up to new ideas and ways of living. This may include significant self work, related to your spiritual life, family life, or relationship to the world. Also see University

Selfishness

When a selfish dream person shows up, you will need to think about how being more aware of your needs can be beneficial. Are you being a doormat? putting everyone else ahead of you. When you think of this particular person, you are reminded that ‘It’s all about you, isn’t it?’ That selfish person is not too likable, but sometimes, you will want to take a page out of his book, and make it more about you and what you need. Don’t ignore your needs too long, own then, make them important to you. You should be considerate of yourself. You are important.

Shamrock

Naturally the shamrock has 3 leaves joined at the center, and sometimes a lucky forth leaf. For me a clover is a symbol of connection - the Trinity, or a trinity of Faith, Hope and Love. It can also mean that you are lucky, a field of them speaking to your abundant luck or good fortune. Maybe you have forgotten all the fortunate things in your life and it would be good to remember them.

Singing / Songs

Singing in your dream can mean that your heart is speaking in its own language (music), often without any words. What is your heart expressing? It’s joy or its sorrow? The emotions in our dreams are our own real emotions, sometimes the ones we don’t know how to express or would be inappropriate to express. Sometimes that is revealed in a song.

The heart needs to be heard too and it will speak in our dreams, especially if not allowed to in our waking lives. If you are singing with another person, is it in perfect harmony? Is this other person themselves, or possibly the other part of ourselves?

If you are a woman, you might sing with a man, who is your inner anima (really part of you that is being developed and given voice). This might mean that you are more in harmony with yourself than you have been before. Singing alongside another person in harmony can be a message about peace, living in peace with that person, enjoying God’s peace in a waking situation. Sometimes our dreams send us a message about our waking lives, but I believe it also sends messages of support. This might not be one to act on, but to just enjoy.

Sitting

If you are sitting in your dream, this is probably not good. It probably means that you are watching others take action, while you sit and watch.

Size

If a person in your dream is not their actual size, but larger or oversized, then perhaps this is a clue that you are making more of that person than is warranted, or that some aspect of your life is twice as big or three times as big as it should be.

Speaking / Speech

If a person speaks to you in a dream, take careful note, looking for puns and hidden meanings. However, as in real life, sometimes actions speak much louder than and words. So if there is a difference between what is spoken and the character's actions, the dream is pointing out this kind the truth of the situation.

Spiders

Spiders can show how we are weaving our destinies or our lives. What is the spider doing in your dream? Is the spider mobilizing, taking action, jumping across the room, walking on the ceiling, able to move in 360 degrees at any time? You may have great powers of daring that you have not realized or taken used yet. What color is the spider in your dream? Is he(you) busy weaving your future?

Spider Web

A spider web can mean many things depending on the context. It can mean that you are actively weaving a beautiful pattern in your life. Or it can also be something old and useless, best swept away. Or perhaps you are stuck in it, and need to get out. Or perhaps it’s a fuzzy way of thinking that is keeping you from seeing the truth and taking decisive action.

Squirrel

Squirrels are very active and pretty loud too. He may be going up and down or round and round without actually getting anywhere. Or he might be showing that you should stop sitting around and get moving.

Or is your dream squirrel chattering away? Maybe a lot of chatter, interference, or verbal clutter is clouding some issue. You need to hear the message, not a lot of noise.

Stall

If you see a bathroom stall, and the dream seems to be about the walls or the little room, not about toileting, you are stalling in your life, not acknowledging and making necessary changes. This is the same message if your car is stalled - your are not moving forward but sitting on the side of the road.

Swivel Chair

This kind of chair indicates mobility in your job or life - you are not stuck. This dream chair can move 360 degrees, back and forth, turn around a situation, and create job mobility - up, out, or through.

Sports Teams

These are also a very supportive symbol. These are often a ‘great cloud of witnesses’ to our progress. They show us that we have extensive resources for growth. We should call on our waking friends, family, books, and other resources to fuel our growth.

Succulents - Cactus, Jade plant, Aloe Vera, Dessert plants

Green succulents, like Cact, Aloe Vera plant , are symbols of rich growth. The leaves are full life-giving water, nutrients, or even medicine. They are associated with desert gardens because they are resilient, storing within themselve their own water and resources. When you see these kind of plants you are seeing that you have abundant internal resources for carrying out your purposes.

Suck

If a dream refers to sucking, you might need nourishment of some sort, possibly spiritual or intellectual. Or, your dream may be a critique - maybe you are being a 'sucker.' That message would require some serious consideration and quick changes to establish boundaries and proper expectations.

Tables

'Coming to the table’ in a dream can mean that we are working toward a changes in our lives. A table is a place of communication and negotiation, usually in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. There will often be a frank message or question in the conversation. The worded message is the most important part.

Also consider what food you are eating at the table. A wide variety of food might indicate you need to open up to more sources of sustenance. Eating dessert (end of the meal) might mean you are coming to the end of a chapter or learning experience, and will soon move on to another phase.

Table Shapes - Round, Square

Square tables might mean that we need more balanced approach to a situation or that we have achieved a balanced approach.

Round tables may point to an area where we are achieving wholeness or need to achieve that wholeness. But it may also point to turning our thinking or situation around, or that we should turn around and not pursue the course we are on.

A round table can also represent your whole self. Sitting at a round table may show that you need to face the center, your center. You will find your answers by being in touch with you, not looking at outward things.

Tears

If you or another character are weeping in your dream, then your real waking emotions are being expressed in your dream. You may feel that there may be no place for this kind of grief and sorrow in your waking life. If that is the case, it's really much better to find a place where it's okay to be sad, to feel loss and grief. There is no time limit set, except what we think others might expect. Really our emotions are what they are, and it's much better to accept their reality and presence (all of them) in our waking life.

Telephone

See Cell Phone.

Test or Exam

In a dream if you are taking an exam, or test, there is a waking situation in which you are or will be tested. If there are details about the test in the dream, these will be helpful to you in understanding the nature of the test as well as the answers. You may even have a helpful instructor that gives you hints.

Is it a grammar test? is the syntax correct? the punctuation? do you need to add commas or periods to a phrase - to make it clearer, create pauses, assist with understanding the meaning?

Are the words spelled correctly? if not, is there a hint there? Once I found a zero in the middle of a word and I think that meant that there was 'zero in the words' that the meaning was elsewhere, that I needed to 'read between the lines.'

Is it a math test? do you need to 'do the math?' 'figure something out?' are you adding 2+2 and getting 5?

Texas

For me, the Texas I visit in my dreams is the Home of the Southern Baptists, strong on law, not so strong on grace or mercy. If I’m in Texas in a dream, I am in a world where the outward appearance of righteousness is very important. Your Texas connotations may be very different from mine, but perhaps you have your own dream location that represents intolerance and rigid adherence to legalistic standards.

Thanksgiving

This is a great symbol that can show up in dreams because it can represent both a holiday, season, an action, or a feeling. Thanksgiving as a holiday can be a highlight of the harvest season where you are seeing the fruits of your labor. In addition, it literally means to give thanks for our good fortune, for a change in circumstance, perhaps taking a broader or longer term view of our situation. If something in your dream happens before thanksgiving, you might still be on your journey and not at the end. If thanksgiving is seen to be before an event or stage, then you might be being told that it is important to get to the point where you can actually give thanks in all circumstances (St. Paul) before you will be able to move on.

Threads

Sometimes the garments or clothes we shop for or see, are not about our roles in live, or person.

If the dream highlights the threads and woven fabric, this says something about our own self, what we are made of, how we are put together, what we aspire to, what we have acheived.

What are the colors of the threds in the garment you see or admire? Colors, black and white would all mean different things. Is the cloth rich, rustic, featherery, glamorous?

Three Leaf Clover or Shamrock

The number three can refer to change, as in the triangle, the symbol for the 'distance between' or the change between. Three leaf clovers can also represent luck, or faith, as in the way St. Patrick used it to explain the separateness and unity of God. It could represent separateness and unity in some other aspect of life, or the tie that binds things together.

Toys

If you find toys in your dream, they can mean that you need to play a little more. Play is a both a means of learning, sharpening skill, and opening up to new people and ideas. Not everything has to be serious. When we get stuck, one of the best things we can might be join a club, investigate a new interest, take time to draw or write. Play automatically leads us into new approaches in life, as well as a more relaxed and happy point of view. If you dream recommends play,  maybe you should lighten up and take a chance!

Trees

Tree are an endless source of symbolism. I believe they can often represent our natural self or our natural growth process. We pull our water and nutrients from the earth which grounds us an supports us. The branches can represent our arms and how we reach out to others for love and to show love. The grove we live in can be our family or community.

To see yourself living in a house made of branches and leaves can mean establishing yourself in your own natural habitat. The living branches can be the community of love that surrounds you, protect you, nurture and support you. Maybe you don't feel that support and your dream is calling it to your attention.

If you see a tree destroyed, cut down, its branches lopped off, this could mean you are experiencing an inability to reach out. You may be experiencing death or loss, shown by the inability to extend your arms. If a space is being cleared of trees, perhaps more space is being made for another field or building. That may not be comfortable for us to see or experience.

Tree with a Bird

When you see a bird sitting in the tree, that tree might be a ‘bird seat’. If a can happens to be up there with the bird, you have a ‘catbird seat.’ A catbird seat is a seat of advantage and benefit, a very positive image. This kind of symbol lets you know that intuitive and natural forces are putting you in a very good spot.

Trees have many various and deep meanings. They are part of our common human heritage and figure into many anciens stories and myths that cross all cultures. The Christian cross is also related to the tree. I’ve added the ‘Catbird seat’ because this dream symbol is unique.

Turn or Turning

Turning happens as you walk in your dreams, which is expressing how you are moving through your life, exploring options, seeking new ways, changing and becoming what you will be. I'm not sure it is significant if you turn to the right or the left, though many dream interpretors will say so. I think the turn is the important part. Maybe you are turning away from some belief, old thinking, harmful actions, or maybe you are turning toward a relationship, new work, or different thoughts and beliefs. See Corner.

Twine

Strings woven together may mean that your heart is woven together with others, your hearts are entwined. You might see this also as being entwined with a lover. This can be related to your connectedness with your spiritual self, a male/female animus/anima figure, with others around you. Also, three strands are not easily broken, speaking to finding strength in our relationships and faith.

Twins or Two Identical People

Twins can either represent duality - opposing characteristics, good and evil, male and female, dark and light. These duo's will probably look different. If the duo are the same, or virtually the same in appearance, then they may mean double the strength - you are getting a double portion of help from the duo. What do they represent? perhaps a different direction, an aspect of yourself that you need to be more aware of and in touch with. I think if there are two of these characters in your dream, then they are a focal point or part of the resolution for the dream. It will be worth it to spend time reflecting on their meaning.

Typo / Typographical Error

If you are called out on a typo in your dream, you have made a small error and it's best to fix it right away. If you don’t it may create greater problems down the line.

Umpires

Umpires control the game, the time and the strike zone. With littler kids, they are also mentors explaining the rules of the game, and giving timely warnings about balks etc… If the umpire talks to you in the dream, you are hearing message from an authority. It’s probably a really practical, easy to understand message.

Unfinished Construction Work

See Construction.

Underground

Underground areas often represent the Unconscious mind, the summation of all that we are, know and have the potential to be. The unconscious according to Jung is the storehouse of all things we know or have observed in our lives, including things that have been forgotten. Sometimes, just as in waking life, we go down to the cellar and pull something back out of storage. Sometimes we find ourselves in the cellar looking through papers (information) or things, looking for the needed item.

In Jungian psychology, it is also the place where our instinctual behaviors, and racial memories live. We sometimes instinctively know things. We sometimes become aware of the items from the Collective Unconscious that exist on this level, and which are common to other cultures from all over the world.

The ground is also the source of life, nutrients, and water that sustain all of our plant life. Plant-life, bug-life, and animal-life go on underground all the time, and we are mostly unaware of this. If you see something happening underground, such as construction work, laying of power lines, then your Unconscious is doing some significant work for you. You can be on the lookout for changes in attitudes (new People), invitations, or open doors up in your ongoing dreams.

University

A place of higher learning. Perhaps you are receiving an invitation to look at things from a more spiritual point of view. Also see Schools.

Youtube

This is the social media site that allows you to communicate with the world at large. Is there some area of your life where you might need to show the real ‘you’, broadcast yourself a bit more? This might mean taking credit for what you do and what you know, reaching out to help others with your life experience, or show a litte more of yourself.

Vampires

Vampires can actually be friendly and not so scary. They are creatures that thrive on blood, or natural sources of nourishment. A vampire can signal that we need to break through the surface and get to what is really important to us on an emotional level. What sorrow or grief is making us bleed? Where are we missing the love we need? Where and how do we need to be more real with ourselves and the people we know?

Veil

A veil or curtain, especially a black one, can represent the barrier between life and death. It shows that whatever or whoever has passed beyond that veil is still very near, just beyond that thin barrier. Everything that was before, still is, only not within our view. Yet all the memories and teachings have been left to us as a gift.

Volley, Volleyball

If you are playing a game of volleyball, you are playing a game with definite rules. The ball has to stay within bounds. If it is a friendly game (non competitive) each side takes a turn returning the ball within bounds. This might refer to the normal exchange of communications between friends or lovers. If there are references to the court, it may refer to dating rituals, with expectations of who will take the lead, who has the ball, and who should act/react next.

Walking

If you are walking in your dream it means you are moving forward in your life, moving purposefully forward. Where are you as you walk? If you walk on a country path you may be looking for nature’s pathway.

If you are crossing a road, perhaps you have reached a crossroads in your life and need to make a decision, or perhaps you are being show that you just have crossed an important barrier to a new place. Are you searching for something, and did you find it? Are there symbols embedded in the searched for object or destination? What does that remind you of in your waking life?

Walking can refer to your walk with God, or walking by faith - either that you are doing this, or that you might need to.

Wallet

I find that my wallet in a dream is usually part of a group of things that I carry in my purse. It is part of the necessary things that includes: my wallet, cell phone, keys, money, and content lenses. If I find that all these things are present and accounted for in a dream, then I’m okay and I have what I need. If these things are missing, that is bad news, and I better make sure I have a backup plan in my waking life.

Water

Water often refers to spiritual sustenance, as in 'streams of living water.' If you are standing or wading into the water, you may be experiencing great progress in understanding, and integrating spiritual messages. Swimming in the sea could mean the same thing. Walking or driving through a snow storm, may mean that you are experiencing a baptism, a passage and a deliverance from what has gone before. You are free now. Is that how you feel?

Webex

In the business world we often meet online, using tools like Webex. In my dreams, this has represented a 'big' meeting as opposed to a face-to-face interaction. If I am feeling anxiety about the webex or something is wrong, off schedule or the technology is not working, the dream will often reflect the fact that I don't feel ready or prepared. I don't know what I want from the meeting. The 'big' part of it means that it is a big deal to me, very important, or at least important enough to worrry about.

Wedding

Marriage and wedding are common Integration themes, the dream could be pointing to any area of your life that requires some new thinking, or the coming together of two seemingly opposed approaches.

Weddings are a coming together of male and female energy to create a perfect whole (you).  A more balanced approach could be helpful in your faith, practice of faith, ideas about love and relationships, or direction in life.

The bride and groom are keys to understanding a message. Are they known to you? Is the bride a nurse bringing healing? Is the groom someone who shows empathy, forgiveness, or expresses emotions easily? What else happens around the wedding? Who else is present? What is the setting?

Wedding Dress

If you are wearing  a wedding dress, it is important to notice the details of the dress. Is it all there for instance or is some part missing or damaged? Does it fit you? If the dress is not perfect (and we know all wedding dresses should be perfect!) then this points to an area of your life that requires some attention. It could mean your marriage, but probably not.

Since marriage and wedding are a common Integration theme, the dream could be pointing to any area of your life that requires some new thinking. Weddings can point to coming together of male and female energy to create a perfect whole (you).

A more balanced approach could be helpful in your faith, practice of faith, ideas about love and relationships, or direction in life.  Are you driving too hard, or not enough? Are you being stopped by old ideas and need new ones? Do  you need a combined approach of intellect and emotion? Other elements of the dream should give you clues on where to focus.

Weeping

See Tears.

Wind

The wind in a dream indicates that there are changes coming. If you are walking through a breezy area, you are flowing through the current changes easily and naturally. If you see a heavy gale blowing away people, buildings, animals, pay attention to the things being blown away. If they are old as in old barns or structures, this indicates that you probably will need to make some big changes to your attitude or situation. The 'old' is literally needing to be blown away to make room for the new new.

Witch, Witches

I believe when we see a supernatural entity in a dream, they are present to help us not to scare us, though we might have that fearful reaction at first. If I see a witch or am in the company of witches, it is because I need some supernatural (more than my own strength or ability) to overcome in a situation I am facing. Sometimes we struggle with issues for a long time as human beings, months, even years. Wouldn't it be great to have a friend who can magically make problems disappear, create a love potion, turn someone into a frog, fly over things? Sometimes a witch can show us how to take leaps forward, over, or past and arrive to our goal more quickly. Let's listen to what they have to say.

Work

If you find yourself in your office or another work setting, the dream may or may not have anything to do with your career or job. A workplace, especially if it is an unknown workplace, can be a place for doing inner work, such as working on our relationships with family, lovers, friends, or development of our own abilities and talents, or delving into our spiritual lives. All these things can be looked at as rewarding areas of work.

Working Out or Workout

If you are doing a physical workout in your dream, this is a great symbol for working out a problem. Answers don't always come easily and sometimes take time, creative approaches, or sweat. But on the other hand, your dream might actually be hinting that you are working too hard at something. Maybe instead of work, you need patience and time. Many problems resolve themselves, or sometimes time gives a different perspective on the problem itself. Sometimes a 'problem' really is an opportunity. Sometimes we approach things with a physical fix, when what is needed is a spiritual fix, or an answered prayer, or a letting go.

Yoga

See Workout.

Zombie

The  walking dead, or almost dead, mostly dead person in a dream can refer to an old idea, thought pattern, relationship, or period of life that is almost past. Soon the zombie will walk out of your life. He/she is there now, but is powerless and feeble, fading away.

Zoo

A zoo is an animal preserve for endanged species, or nearly extinct species. If the setting of your dream is a zoo, you may be dealing with an 'end of the road' kind of issue, where what you have/had is all but extinct. If it's a relationship, don't look for it to be restored, your dream is telling you, it will soon be gone, not matter what your efforts or wishes. It is time to reassess and move on.
